What causes dark circles under the eyes?

The skin around the eyes is one of the thinnest areas of skin in the body, so the swelling or discoloration can be very noticeable causing you to really see your dark circles and puffy eyes or “bags”. For many people puffy eyes and dark circles simply run in the family.  Cosmetic companies boast of under eye creams that can erase dark circles and help reduce puffiness.  Some can reduce the appearance temporarily but for the most part save your money!  Creams with caffeine in them do reduce the appearance of puffiness but the dark circles are tough to eliminate.  Dark circles and puffy eyes can be caused by overconsumption of salt, which can cause excess fluid retention.  Seasonal allergies are a known cause inflammation and swelling, dehydration and sinus problems, stress, crying, fatigue and the lack of sleep, inherited facial features, and good old aging!  So what can you do to reduce the appearance of dark circles and puffiness under your eyes?  Try some of the following:

Use eye drops for irritation caused by allergies.

Drinking ample fluid to prevent dehydration.

Apply iced compresses when your lids are swollen.

Apply cucumber slices or chilled tea bags over closed eyes.

Use creams and other skin products specially formulated for use around the eyes.

Reducing salt in your diet.
