The need for reading glasses truly is dependent upon the patient’s age. If the patient is in the 40s, 50s, or 60s and they want both eyes corrected for full distance vision, we can do that for them. However, they need to understand that as part of the normal aging process of the eye, they will need magnification glasses for the near, fine print. There is an option called Monovision, which we offer to people this age. We do the dominant eye for distance, and we leave the non-dominant eye a little shortsighted. This allows the patient to see street signs while driving and to read a menu in a restaurant. This works very well for most people. However, we have to trial it in advance with contact lenses to see if you can handle that type of procedure. If you’re under the age of 40, there’s no need to worry about any of this because you will see perfectly at distance and at near until you age in your 40s, 50s, and 60s at which time you will need some magnification glasses.
