PRK eye

The Alcon EX 500 laser system is one of the most advanced excimer lasers used in eye surgery procedures. It’s one of the many pieces of state-of-the-art equipment we use at our Washington, D.C. practice to perform LASIK, PRK, and other vision correction surgeries.

For eye surgeons, the many advantages of the Alcon EX 500 are clear. For patients, the benefits are not so obvious. Given this fact, we’d like to go over some of the key benefits of the Alcon EX 500 and why this laser system leads to better vision and higher levels of patient satisfaction.

Corneal Wavefront Optimized® Laser Eye Surgery

Custom LASIK is a computer-guided form of the surgical procedure. Custom LASIK uses a detailed scan of the surface o the eye to create a three-dimensional map. This map of the surface of the eye guides the laser during the surgical procedure, making corrections to the cornea where needed in order to address the specific needs of the patient.

Greater Accuracy Thanks to PerfectPulse Technology™

In addition to the wavefront mapping, the Alcon EX 500 also uses PerfectPulse Technology™. This feature tracks the movement of the eye during surgery, noting the position of the eye 200 times per second. This incredible eye-tracking technology helps regulate the power of the laser and ensures precise placement of the laser during all times of the procedure.

Larger Optical Zones

Thanks to the PerfectPulse Technology™, the Alcon EX 500 is able to treat a larger optical zone. In simple terms, an optical zone is the portion of the cornea that can be treated during surgery. Treating a large optical zone helps address night vision issue and can be particularly helpful for patients who have large pupils. The small laser beam of the Alcon EX 500 system helps ensure smooth edges and contours for any corneal corrections made.

Approved to Treat a Wide Range of Patients

Given the safety and accuracy of the Alcon EX 500 system and the ability to treat a larger optical zone, a wider range of patients can undergo vision surgery thanks to this technology. Studies have found the Alcon EX 500 system can successfully treat people suffering from extreme nearsightedness (myopia) and extreme farsightedness (hyperopia), with or without astigmatism.

Faster Surgery and Healing Times

The Alcon EX 500 is 100 times faster than other laser systems, which can significantly reduce the overall time required to perform an eye surgery. The degree of accuracy and speed during the actual procedure also translates into faster healing times for patients.

Better Overall Vision Quality

The precision and customization of the Alcon EX 500 system can boost your chances of experiencing better vision quality overall at the end of treatment. This means a greater likelihood of achieving 20/20 vision, as well as better vision at night and fewer problems with post-surgical side effects.
