When it comes to corrective vision procedures, LASIK is among the most popular. It can reduce or eliminate the need for glasses and contacts and improve overall quality of life. One of the most common questions we hear from our Washington, DC, patients is: When it is safe to resume sex after LASIK? In this informative blog post, Dr. Andrew E. Holzman discusses this topic and offers a few recommendations for a successful recovery.

Week One after LASIK

Following LASIK, the first week of recovery is the most crucial. In general, most patients are able to drive, work, and resume most normal activities in a day or two.

However, there are still certain precautions that must be followed during this early phase of healing. For example, patients should avoid getting water in their eyes when showering or bathing. They should also take steps to reduce the risk of infection by avoiding eye makeup and other irritants.

What about Sex during the First Week of Recovery?

In general, the majority of sexual relations can resume, even during the first week post-operatively. But we recommend that special care is given during the first several days to not accidentally bump the eyes or expose them to sweat, dirt, and other irritants.

The LASIK procedure involves a protective flap on the cornea, and we do not want anything to disturb the position of that flap. In the PRK procedure there is a protective bandage contact lens which is placed over the corneal wound. It is important to prevent contaminated materials or fluids from entering the eyes during the healing period.

Additional Protective Measures

We provide goggles for sleeping use during the first week of recovery to protect against accidentally putting pressure on the eyes. Some patients might feel more comfortable using these goggles during sexual relations, but this generally will not be necessary beyond week one. As with any post-surgical activity, using common sense and a little extra caution is required.

Other Tips for a Successful Recovery

In addition to precautions taken regarding sex after LASIK, there are a few other things to keep in mind during recovery. These recommendations can help you prevent injury or infection after your procedure at our Washington, DC, practice:

  • Avoid showering the day of your procedure. Wait until the next morning.
  • Keep soap, cosmetics, and hair sprays away from your eyes.
  • Do not rub your eyes for at least one month and try to avoid doing it altogether.
  • Do not drive until cleared by Dr. Holzman or the Doctor caring for you.
  • Wear protective goggles while you sleep for at least the first week.
  • Avoid pools, hot tubs and natural bodies of water for two weeks.
  • Wear sunglasses when outdoors to prevent sensitivity and protect your eyes from harmful UV rays.
  • Avoid dusty or dry environments for one week.
